Do we become more conservative as we get older?

A conversation we started last night: is it true that people become more conservative (with a small ‘c’) as they get older?

If so, is this sort of conservatism a sign of the wisdom that supposedly comes with age?

How would it be possible to prove or disprove this idea anyway – with something firmer than anecdotal evidence?
