I don’t really know why we end up taking holidays at the same time as everyone else – we don’t have children, the weather’s stupidly hot, and the prices are higher, but at least when you go on holiday in Italy, you’re on holiday at the same time as all the Italians. This is good for us, because we ended up speaking Italian to everyone except each other.
We stayed in Tuscany in an Agriturismo called Poggio Aione, who have a website in Italian only (another selling point for us). There was no intention to make it such, but the holiday turned out to have an Etruscan theme. The Etruscans were in the region before the Romans came along and sat upon them, wiping out almost all trace of their existance, but they were pretty impressive at jewellery and rock carving.
The hot springs were good too.
